Hummingbird-Princess
Acrylic, size 12 3/8" x 8 1/2"

Hummingbird-princess flew into my imagination from an old wall calendar with a photograph of a hummingbird hovering in front of a pink succulent flower. Birds in various forms, in the distan sky or up close with a human face have appeared in my art for years. When I create, like most artists, I enter a dimension of myth, a parallel reality, some might say actual reality. Artists have the ability to bridge ‘this’ and ‘that’ world. In working on hummingbird-princess it seemed obvious and natural that she would have a human face. The little ñusta appeared in my sketch with a strong presence.

While traveling in Peru with Valerie Niestrath and Juan Nunez del Prado a few years back, I was struck by the fact that I’ve unconsciously created the vegetation of Machu Picchu by my house; rich deep-green plants with splashes of color in the form of impatiens. This is what my shade garden looks like; a mysterious web connecting all thing. I was so please to realize that Machu Picchu is built in the shape of a hummingbird, and that a hummingbird, a rare sight at my home, visited the garden the week I left for Peru.
